Today was a perfect Autumn Day - I started with coffee and fruit bread, baked a batch of biscuits and then set off wandering the warm sun, kicking the leaves as I went. It is so beautiful here at the moment on nice days, the leaves are all the colours of a raging fire in all its different hues and it's almost enough to make me love Autumn. I spent my morning ducking in and out of second-hand bookstores and little foody shops and errand running until my tummy started to rumble. I had leftover jambalaya from last night's dinner at home but really wanted to save that for Monday's lunch, and the idea of a nice, hot meal was very appetizing as the sun started to hide behind the clouds and wind picked up.
I wandered along Yates to collect some red wine for some of my recipes this week and spied Vietnam House. I've only had Vietnamese once or twice since moving to Victoria and have had several recommendations from friends, but no one has either raved or ranted about Vietnam House. It was close, on the way home, and had a table with a wee patch of sun just inside and so I ducked in and checked out the menu. It's not the most expansive of menus, but has all the regular favourites and most meals are under $10 including tax so I was sold. I chose the house specialty which included several cuts of beef and various innards served with the standard plate of Vietnamese basil, lime and sprouts. A quick splash of hot sauce and a spoon of chilies and I was on my way.
It was by no means the best pho I have ever had, but it was pretty tasty, cheap and on the way home. I'm not super enthused to visit Vietnam House again, but that is more to do with the fact that I have several highly recommended spots to hit up first, than my experience today. I love pho and am pretty picky when comes to this particular bowl of deliciousness but Vietnam House ticked all the boxes so today so I think I better give credit where credit is due.
