Back in November 2008 I was in Vietnam to attend a friend's wedding and had a few days to myself in Ho Chi Minh City. Normally when traveling I am all about eating at markets, trying the local food and really getting to know a place through its cuisine. But sometimes you have to treat yourself. And sometimes it's just too hot to eat pho or stir-fried dishes. Sometimes you just need a nice, cold icecream. So, on one particularly hot afternoon in Saigon I found myself standing on a street filled with motorcycles and auto-workshops, staring at a cute French colonial house with a tiny wee sign out the front: Fanny.
All jokes about the name aside, Fanny is heaven. For sure you're not going to be paying the peanuts you pay for first class cuisine on the street, but then Fanny aint no street food. Fanny is the most amazing icecream you'll find in South East Asia, and the presentation is almost even better than the taste. So next time you're down in Ho Chi Minh City be sure to stop by, and have a few cool moments of calm amongst the fiery hot chaos that is Saigon.
